Ross Dance Company,LLC a professional touring modern jazz company, was founded by Tecsia Ross in August 2005. Ross Dance has presented full evenings of soulful modern jazz choreography at Merce Cunningham in New York City, CounterPulse, Laney College, Madrid in Los Angeles, and UC Berkeley. Ross repertory (Evening of Soulful Modern Jazz {2005} and Testimony {2006}) has explored the challenges and empowerment of spirituality, women gender roles, strength of sisterhood, and the power of freedom. The intent behind Ross’ work is to highlight and comment on the social discourse that individuals face in their relationships, spirituality, and society. Ross strides to invite the audience into the stories of social discourse by connecting with their mind, emotions and soul. In addition to presenting choreography to diverse audiences, Ross is committed to community outreach and educating young dancers. The company offers beginning-to- advanced level classes in hip hop, ballet, contemporary, and jazz and an annual summer conference. We offer a low cost praise dance program to Christian youth from different churches. We teach a free after school dance program at Bay Area Technology School to youth from the ages of 11-14. In this program youth are taught to use dance as a way of expression and self-discovery.
Lastly we give opportunities to young artists to present their works by inviting them to our annual “Emerging Choreographer’s Festival” or having a young guest artist premiere his or her work at our company performances. We have talented dancers and choreographers that come from excellent training. Among our staff we have jazz instructor Antoine Hunter who dances for Savage Jazz, Amy Malepeai who was an Oakland Ballet dancer and now a Ross company member, praise dance instructor Shereel Washington, co-director of IXALT and co-founder of Black Choreographer's Night. We are dedicated in inviting individuals that come from diverse dance and ethnic backgrounds.
Ross Dance goal is to give dance back to the community since the community created it. It is our vision to give dancers who have a dream and a passion to dance to share their story.
