| Reviewed by Timea Soos from Laney Tower Newspaper Testimony is a powerfully choreographed work of modern dance that is enchanting. Performed by the Ross Dance Company of Oakland , whose mission is to “create work that represents the human experience.” The different scenes in the show were entitled Love, Just a Little Lipgloss, Sometimes, Learn, Reminiscence, One Deadly Sin, Live, My Testimony, and Serenity. The music was intertwined with the moving painting that the dances created upon the stage. Testimony is about the truth that we all carry inside. The truth that seems ugly and we don’t want to divulge our secrets to everyone. Feminist undercurrents are also visible in the piece when in a scene; the spoken words tell us that Maybelline cannot cover up our tears and what is wrong with our imperfections anyway? It’s an interesting point to make, because the media tells us exactly what beauty means and young girls take this to heart. The founder and artistic director for the Ross Dance Company is Tecsia Ross. She received her bachelor of arts degree in Psychology and Dance from the University of California , Berkeley . She also teaches hip hop, modern, and jazz dance throughout the Bay Area. The dancers include Paris B. Adkins, Amy Malepeai, Annie Henry, Nicole Pagan, and Mana Hayakawa. The company consists of all women from different ethnicities. “We are dedicated in using modern jazz as a means of discussing issues such as spirituality, class, race, and gender.” One Deadly Sin is the sixth scene, one that manages to be truly exhilarating and terrifying all in the same breath. The dancers are bound up with rope around their wrists, signifying a bondage to something that won’t let them get away. With the booming music and the blood red lighting, it is hard not to let your adrenaline run a bit high. Ross Dance Company is an up and coming dance company in the Bay Area that manages to creatively defy society and instead gives its own testimony both collectively and individually. |
